Whether it's aggregating produce to feed the community, opening commercial kitchen space access, or building a new worker-owned business, learn from leaders in this session on how they are turning business-as-usual on its head to build community wealth and health.

Join this session to learn about the Productive Landscapes Map, a tool that is being developed to help identify and prioritize underutilized land in Cook County that may be appropriate for agriculture coupled with other beneficial uses. Emerging from the Cook County Productive Landscapes Task Force, the goal of this work is to expand secure access to urban and peri-urban farmland using the community-based framework outlined in the report “Productive Landscapes in Chicago and the Southland.” The report, published by the Chicago Food Policy Action Council (CFPAC) in 2017, was informed by a series of facilitated conversations concerning how various stakeholders could help foster the growth of urban agriculture in the Millennium Reserve Area, covering Chicago’s South Side and suburban municipalities in southern Cook County.

By definition, food hubs can take many forms but ultimately support multiple farmers in making sales. Some physically aggregate and distribute products from multiple farms, while others process and turn fresh items into "value-added" products. Still others provide shared marketing and facilitate sales on behalf of a group of farmers. Join researchers for a look at food hub research and the role they currently play--and may increasingly play--in supporting farmers across Cook County and the surrounding region.

--

The COVID-19 pandemic did not invent food insecurity and inequitable food access in Cook County, but it has exacerbated many of these existing issues. Many have lost their jobs, but may not qualify for adequate unemployment benefits to cover their needs. At the same time, the federal government has rolled back SNAP benefits, leaving many more families, especially in Black and Brown communities, without critical access to food. Cook County residents have shown up for one another in a big way by ensuring good food is available for all those in need. Organizers have also recognized that there is an opportunity to build long term solutions through this challenging time--responding to food insecurity in ways that build community wealth and sustainability while providing healthy, culturally relevant emergency meals. Learn from an inspiring and driven panel of organizers about the challenges and successes in building community through food during the pandemic.

--
